Welcome!

Welcome to the inaugural blog post on thejesseedwards.com!

My name is Jesse Edwards. I come from Mystic, CT, and was essentially raised on the grounds of Mystic Seaport, a living-history maritime museum and home to the Charles W. Morgan, the world’s last surviving wooden whaleship. My mother is a Hermann Melville scholar and Associate Professor of English at UConn. My father is a self-employed musician. They have both worked at Mystic Seaport for about 30 years. I’ve been surrounded by boats, music, and history for as long as I can remember.

This leads me to one of my first passions: music. My father taught me to play banjo when I was seven; it didn’t stick. The next year, we tried guitar; it did. Since then, I’ve been learning to play and writing as many songs on as many instruments as I could get my hands on. In middle school, I learned to play the flute. That was right around the same time as I started my band, Defenders of Pluto, in which I began to expand my horizons even more, learning bass and drums. In high school, I picked up mallet percussion for the Marching Band, and also learned to play the mandolin and the ukulele. My band finally recorded our first proper album during my first year of college.

Arriving at college brought to my attention an enthusiasm I’d always had, but had never explored: my strong interest in films, and filmmaking. I had had a video blog for a while, but had never thought of it as a true creative outlet. By the end of my first semester, I had declared a major in film, and by the end of my freshman year, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in filmmaking. Under the tutelage of Ross Morin, I have learned a lot about myself as an artist, and look forward to telling more stories that matter to me through this medium.

Today, I’m working as an intern at A76 Productions, a production company in Manhattan. I am working with Will Shishmanian, a talented singer-songwriter that I knew back when we both lived in Connecticut, on a new musical project. I am taking this summer to figure out exactly what in filmmaking I am most interested in doing, and to learn about myself as I live truly away from home for the first time in my life.

On this blog, I will alternate irregularly between updates on my life and ambitions and my opinions on television shows, films, books, art, and music that I think deserve comment. If you are interested in that, you can follow this blog!

Onward and upward.
